Dr. Vivek Vij is the founder-director of Fortis Healthcare's liver transplant programme and one of India's foremost liver transplant and hepatobiliary surgeons. His 25-year career at Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurugram has made it one of India's most respected and high-volume liver transplant centres, with over 2,500 liver transplant surgeries performed and outcomes consistently benchmarking against the best international centres.
Dr. Vij's surgical training combines Indian and British credentialling. After his MBBS and MS in General Surgery, he pursued the MRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh – one of the world's most prestigious surgical bodies – followed by DNB in Surgical Gastroenterology. This combination equipped him with both Indian clinical exposure and internationally validated surgical credentials to build a world-class transplant programme.
As the architect of Fortis's liver transplant programme from its inception, Dr. Vij built its protocols, multidisciplinary team and quality systems from the ground up. The programme performs living donor liver transplants, deceased donor transplants, split-liver transplants for two recipients, ABO-incompatible transplants and paediatric transplants. Five-year graft survival rates meet international benchmarks. International patient volumes from the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia and South-East Asia testify to the programme's global reputation.
Dr. Vij's HPB surgery expertise extends far beyond transplantation. He performs complex liver resections for hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma and liver metastases from colorectal and other primaries. His pancreatic surgery expertise includes pancreaticoduodenectomy – the Whipple procedure – distal pancreatectomy and enucleation for pancreatic tumours. He has been an early adopter of laparoscopic approaches to major HPB surgery, offering patients minimally invasive alternatives to open hepatectomy and Whipple procedure with equivalent oncological outcomes.
An international educator and researcher, Dr. Vij presents at ILTS and A-PHPBA congresses and has published extensively in peer-reviewed surgical and transplant journals. He has trained numerous HPB and transplant surgeons from India and abroad and received the ILTS Outstanding Contribution Award and Outlook Health Best Liver Transplant Surgeon Award.
For patients with end-stage liver disease, liver cancer, pancreatic tumours or complex HPB pathology in Delhi NCR, Dr. Vivek Vij at Fortis Memorial Research Institute offers 25 years of hepatobiliary and transplant surgical excellence within India's most comprehensively equipped and internationally accredited quaternary care hospital.
