Dr. Arvinder Singh Soin

Dr. Arvinder Singh Soin is India's foremost liver transplant surgeon and one of the world's leading authorities in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). As Chief of Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary Sciences at Medanta – The Medicity in Gurugram, he has built one of the globe's highest-volume liver transplant programmes with outcomes consistently matching the best international benchmarks. His programme attracts patients from over 50 countries, with strong volumes from the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia. Dr. Soin completed his MBBS, MS in General Surgery and MCh in Surgical Gastroenterology before undertaking a Fellowship in Liver Transplantation at King's College Hospital in London – one of Europe's foremost liver transplant centres. This training gave him comprehensive exposure to both deceased donor and living donor techniques, complex hepatobiliary surgery and the multidisciplinary management of end-stage liver disease. Dr. Soin is widely credited as the pioneer of living donor liver transplantation in India. Where deceased donor organ availability is limited, he developed innovative LDLT protocols that have given thousands of patients access to potentially life-saving surgery. His work is recognised internationally as a model for developing-world transplant programmes operating under cadaveric organ scarcity. Over his career he has performed over 3,000 liver transplant surgeries encompassing adult LDLT, paediatric LDLT, split-liver transplantation, ABO-incompatible transplant and re-transplantation. His five-year patient survival rates exceed 85%, meeting or exceeding outcomes from leading centres in the USA and Europe. His paediatric programme treats children with biliary atresia, acute liver failure, metabolic liver diseases and other paediatric indications with equal clinical excellence. Beyond transplantation, Dr. Soin is expert in hepatobiliary surgery for liver cancer – hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma and liver metastases – biliary reconstruction for complex bile duct injuries and portal hypertension management. He has been an early adopter of laparoscopic approaches to major HPB surgery, offering selected patients minimally invasive alternatives. A prolific researcher and international educator, Dr. Soin serves as Past President of ISOT and is active faculty at the International Liver Transplantation Society. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed transplant journals and trained dozens of liver transplant surgeons from India and abroad. His contributions have been recognised with the FICCI Healthcare Excellence Award and the ISOT Award for outstanding contribution to transplant surgery in India.
